Travelling outside of Canada with your pet?
If you are a current client of Fort Malden Animal Hospital, we can assist you with the process of travelling to other countries with your pet.

It is your responsibility as the pet owner to contact the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to determine exact requirements for travel specific to the destination country. Please see the CFIA’s website for more information (https://inspection.canada.ca/en/animal-health/terrestrial-animals/exports/pets) and give them a call at CFIA Windsor (519) 969-2522, Address: 2000 Continental Ave, Windsor ON N9E 3P1. The process must be investigated a minimum of three months prior to travel. The pet owners are responsible to coordinate all requirements with the CFIA prior to exporting a pet.
Each country has different requirements and necessitates thorough planning to ensure the deadlines for vaccination, testing (such as rabies titers which can often take 4-6 weeks to receive results), treatment, and examination are appropriately scheduled. Some countries may also require owners to have an import permit in addition to an export certificate.
All documentation and certificates must be reviewed well in advance in order to plan dates for testing, vaccination, and appointments. After a veterinary certificate is issued from our clinic, you must have an appointment with a CFIA veterinarian for their review of certification prior to travel. The owners are responsible for booking this appointment with the CFIA.
If the country you are travelling to has no negotiated export certificate, you must determine from the CFIA and embassy of the destination country current import requirements. In this case, typically the Canadian International Health Certificate is used (either Bilingual or Trilingual, depending on import country).
Certain documentation will require legal or letter sized paper, this information must be followed. Also, all documentation must be filled in with a blue pen.
Depending on the country requirements, some pet owners have contacted third party companies to assist with pet travel requirements and planning. There are many companies present which specialize in specific countries. We do not have further information regarding referral to these organizations.
